Investigating the empirical relationship between patient safety culture and the enabling and inhibiting factors influencing operating theatre personnel.
Kort beskrivelse av prosjektet
“Patient safety is recognised as a major global public health challenge, with estimates indicating that 1 in every 10 patients are harmed during healthcare, and that nearly one- quarter of these events are preventable. Patient safety culture has repeatedly been shown to correlate with patient outcomes, as healthcare professionals’ perceptions reflect how safety is prioritised and enacted in clinical practice. This culture is shaped by a range of organisational and workforce-related factors, making it essential to identify and understand these mechanisms to strengthen safe healthcare delivery.
Operating theatres represent highly complex and fast-paced environments characterised by high cognitive demands, multitasking and interruptions. These conditions require teams to maintain a shared situational awareness and rely on effective communication, decision-making, and error recognition at both the individual and team levels. Consequently, patient safety culture, shaped by psychological safety and organisational facilitation, forms a vital foundation for safe team performance in the operating theatre.
Investigating the mechanisms of patient safety culture in the operating theatre setting through three interconnected studies. Descriptive patient safety culture data with inferential analysis of organisational and sociodemographic factors (1). Validation of scales used to measure enabling and inhibiting factors, with association analysis between overall patient safety rating (2). Investigating whether patient safety culture functions as a mediating mechanism between transformational leadership and key enabling factors (3).”
