The use of rescue hoist in the Norwegian Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS).
Kort beskrivelse av prosjektet
The Norwegian helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS), as it exists today, was introduced in 1977 by physician Jens Moe. During his medical training, Moe became familiar with air ambulance systems in other parts of Europe, particularly in alpine regions. A key feature of these services was their ability to extract injured individuals from areas where helicopters could not land. This was achieved by deploying a rescuer suspended from the helicopter by a rope—commonly referred to as human external cargo (HEC). This method was adopted in Norway and has been in continuous use since 1977. While largely unchanged in principle, developments over time have primarily involved equipment improvements and modifications to rope attachment systems.
In contrast, many European air ambulance services have gradually moved away from rope-based operations and now rely predominantly on helicopter hoist operations.
This PhD project, titled “The Use of Rescue Hoist in the Norwegian Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS)”, aims to investigate the potential benefits of transitioning from rope-based methods—Rescue Rope Operations (RRO)—to Helicopter Hoist Operations (HHO) within Norwegian HEMS. The central hypothesis is that implementing HHO may reduce risk and exposure for both patients and crew, decrease mission duration, and facilitate faster transport of injured individuals to hospital care.
