With the Arctic warming faster than anywhere else on the planet, there are those who are watching the effects of climate change on the landscape with worry. Others are looking at opportunities for economic development and resource exploitation. In all of this, the resources and landscapes of the Arctic are increasingly seen as important for supporting the Green Transition and climate action, especially in the European context.
The climate crisis has been caused by a political and economic system that hasn't accounted for its effects on the environment or social well-being of future generations. Unfortunately, the development of resources in the Arctic is no magic solution to resolving the climate crisis.
If Arctic economic development is going to be sustainable, it needs to be built around more than 'green' technologies. It needs to be built on just and ethical decision-making for Arctic citizens.
