Generative Artificial Intelligence is reshaping not only the tools we use but also the frameworks for studying and producing knowledge in the social sciences and history. Automated processes raise questions of method, transparency, and power: How do algorithms influence research practices and teaching, and what ethical and epistemological challenges arise when machines become part of scholarly analysis?
For historians, the implications are both practical and fundamental. AI can process massive text corpora, correct OCR errors, perform network and sentiment analysis, and integrate with existing tools. Professor Federico Mazzini offers a critical and hands-on perspective on how GenAI can be used, and how it should be assessed, in historical research, from current experiments to future scenarios involving AI assistants and institutional chatbots.
