The open call for visual artists is organized by Nord University, Postboks 1490, 8049 Bodø.
Project description:
This open call serves as a platform to elevate the voices and achievements of female researchers and artists, shedding light on their invaluable work and inspiring future generations. Selected artworks will be showcased in dedicated exhibitions, providing a powerful visual representation of the intersection between art, science, and gender equality.
The open call focuses on the perception of marine themes and promoting female researchers through art created by women. The artwork will correspond with one of the topics presented by researchers from Nord University.
Eligibility:
The open call is open to female, or all who identify as female, professional visual artists currently residing in Norway or have resided in Norway within the last 5 years. All participants must be of legal age (18 years old).
Submission guidelines:
Artists are invited to submit artworks or proposals for a new artwork inspired by research conducted by female researchers in marine science at Nord University. A list of female researchers with short description can be found on the open call website and in the registration form. Researchers from Nord University can be contacted during the process.
Submissions can include new artwork specifically made for this open call or existing artworks that align with the theme.
All visual art mediums are welcome, including but not limited to paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography, digital art, and mixed media.
Submissions should be accompanied by a brief artist statement (max. 100 words) explaining the inspiration behind the artwork.
Artists may submit up to three entries. One individual artwork is considered as one entry.
Fees:
Submission of artwork is free of charge.
The organizer will award up to ten cash prizes to selected artists with value of 10 000 Nok each.
Selected artworks will be featured in an art exhibition organized by Nord University in September 2024.
The cash prizes and exhibition opportunity aim to recognize and promote the talent of visual artists contributing to the theme of the project.
Additional possibilities for selected artists:
International exhibition in the State Gallery of Art in Sopot, Poland autumn 2025 with book publication.
Potential purchase of copyright to be used by Nord University beyond the scope of this project.
Selection process and jury:
Artists must submit their artworks electronically via registration form.
The selection of artworks will be conducted by a jury panel appointed by Nord University.
The jury panel will comprise art experts as well as representatives from Nord University.
The jury will evaluate submissions based on artistic merit, relevance to the project theme, and overall quality.
Selected artists will be notified via email by 01.07.2024 and announced on Nord University’s official website and social media channels.
Selected artists must submit high-resolution images of the artworks. Detailed instructions regarding format of the images will be provided to selected artists upon acceptance.
Shipment and Installation:
Artist will receive additional 2000 NOK for each selected artwork shipment (both ways). Artwork must be delivered to the designated exhibition venue by 06.09.2024. Artwork will be shipped back to the artists after the end of the exhibition.
Detailed instructions regarding shipping and installation procedures will be provided to selected artists upon acceptance.
Artists should ensure that their artworks are suitable for display in the designated exhibition space and can be safely installed and removed.

Venue:
The art exhibition will be held in Noatun, a brand-new building of Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture at Nord University. Noatun is set to open shortly before the exhibition's launch in September. This state-of-the-art venue promises a modern and dynamic setting to showcase artworks. However, in the event of any unforeseen delays in the building's completion, the venue may change in order to ensure the exhibition proceeds as planned. Rest assured, regardless of the venue, the selected artworks will be displayed with the utmost care providing a captivating experience for the audience.
Reproduction rights:
By participating in the open call, artists grant Nord University non-exclusive right for reproduction, display, and distribution of the selected artworks for the purposes of promoting the project in the future.
Reproduction rights are limited to the context of the project and may include digital and print materials, exhibition catalogues, promotional materials, and online platforms related to the project.
Artists retain copyright ownership of their artworks and may continue to exhibit and reproduce them outside the scope of the project.
Acceptance of terms:
Participation in the open call constitutes acceptance of these terms and conditions.
Artists agree to comply with all rules and guidelines outlined by the organizer.
