Mette Spliid Ludvigsen
Background
I am a registered nurse (1987) with a Master’s degree in Nursing Science (1996). I obtained my PhD from Aarhus University in 2009 and have also completed further training in Medical Anthropology (2000).
Research
My research is primarily qualitative and focuses on patient and user perspectives in healthcare, with particular emphasis on user involvement and dialysis nursing. An overarching aim has been to develop research-based knowledge that benefits patients and service users, while also facilitating the further development of research projects in collaboration with students and early-career researchers.
I also engage with research questions related to diverse patient and user groups, including through the research groups Ethical and Professional Practice in Nursing (EppiS) and PRANSIT. In addition, I participate in the project AI-HEALTH Nordic: AI-driven SmartCare for rural communities, which involves collaboration with the private sector on the development and evaluation of AI-based technologies in healthcare.
I have a particular interest in knowledge syntheses and am also involved in methodological development within this field.
Publications and Scholarly Contributions
Since completing my PhD in 2009, I have developed an an extensive and coherent body of research within nursing science. My work comprises both qualitative knowledge syntheses and empirical studies, reflecting a sustained research engagement with patient experiences, relationships, and quality of care across life stages and patient groups.
A central concern in my work has been to articulate experiential knowledge and contribute to strengthening the evidence base for relational practice, patient safety, and quality improvement.
I have also contributed to the development of the field through textbook chapters, guideline development, and peer review activities, and I serve on the editorial board of an international journal.
Professional Affiliations
I am a Fellow of the European Academy of Nursing Sciences (FEANS) and a member of its Scientific Committee.
At Nord University, I am affiliated with the research group Ethical and Professional Practice in Nursing (EppiS).
For more than 15 years, I have been engaged in a close Nordic research collaboration within the PRANSIT group, involving colleagues from Norway, Sweden, the Faroe Islands, and Denmark. This collaboration focuses on health-related transitions and has contributed particularly to the development and application of qualitative evidence syntheses.
I am currently involved as an advisor in an international project funded by the UK Medical Research Council, aiming to develop a new reporting guideline for qualitative evidence syntheses (PRISMA QES). The project is co-led by Professor Jane Noyes (Bangor University) and Professor Emma France (University of Stirling).
Academic Assessment and Peer Review
I have extensive experience in academic assessment at PhD level, both as chair and member of evaluation committees, including the assessment of doctoral theses and public defences. I have also participated in evaluation processes related to appointments to Associate Professor and Professor positions.
Areas of Expertise
Methods: qualitative interviews, focus groups, observation and qualitative analysis, including hermeneutic phenomenological analysis, scoping reviews, and systematic qualitative evidence syntheses, as well as research on complex interventions.
Theoretical approaches: nursing and care theories, transition theory, and hermeneutic phenomenology.
Fields of research: dialysis nursing, children and adolescents, and individuals living with long-term and complex health conditions, as well as their interactions with healthcare services.
Programme Leader (SPA) for the PhD in Science of Professsions at Nord University and Course Coordinator for the programme’s mandatory course, PRO9014: Science of Professsions with an Emphasis on Language, Relationships, and Actions (since 2022). In this role, I am responsible for the academic leadership and development of the programme, as well as teaching and supervision at PhD level. I also contribute to teaching in the course PRO9017: Secondary Analysis; Systematic and Scoping Literature Reviews; Meta-analysis and Meta-synthesis (since 2022), with particular responsibility for meta-synthesis. I am available for teaching and supervision at all levels, from bachelor’s to PhD, and have particular experience and a primary focus in supervision at master’s and PhD level.

Supervision of Students and Early-Career Researchers
I have extensive experience supervising Master’s and PhD candidates and have supported students throughout research processes, with particular emphasis on methodology, academic writing, and theoretical development. I have also held mentoring roles for early-career researchers at Aarhus University and Nord University, with a strong focus on supporting the development of independent research profiles.
Opportunities for PhD Projects
Potential PhD projects may be developed within research on patient and user perspectives, user involvement in healthcare, and the development and evaluation of person-centred and complex interventions. Projects may also address methodological development within qualitative approaches, including qualitative evidence syntheses (meta-syntheses and scoping reviews).
I welcome collaboration on PhD projects and invite prospective candidates to get in touch to discuss research ideas.
